Did anyone notice Don King whispering in Sam Peters ear last night, right after Max Kellerman asked him who he would like to fight next? Sam then said "i'll leave that up to Don King". I have noticed this with many other fighters aswell. Anybody know why?
Why do promoters usually instruct thier fighters to NOT call out any fighters?

i did notice don saying something to peter.. i thought he said that peter would knock klitschko out, but i'm not 100% positive.. i get ur point though, promoters want control of who their fighters fight i guess, and want nothing (including their fighter's opinion) to get in the way -
Because Don King is signed to Sam Peter, and that contract gives Don sole rights to who Sam Peter fights and what the perentage is going to be.
Promotors jobs in a nutshell is to make the most money possible out of a fighter. That basically means take the most easier money fights first. Wlad is obviously the biggest "threat" to fight, and the greatest possibility to lose. If you lose then you lose your edge to argue about money. If Sam keeps winning he can argue for the bigger purses and Don King makes more money based off his percentage.
Which is usually why you see lots of champions not fighting the absolute best, because thats not how you make money in boxing. In general Im speaking, of course theres your exceptions like Oscar... he has a phenomenal resume.
But basically Sam has a belt now, hes a legitimate champion, and can now fight other lesser heavyweights for good money, and less risk. And thats Dons first incentive. Money. But sam will fight Wlad eventually I know that, He ll prolly fight Vitali first though...Last edited by THE REED; 03-09-2008, 11:58 PM.Comment

I understand what you're saying, but what does being under contract have to do with who you would like to fight? It doesnt necessarily mean that the fight has to be made. Everybody knows that the promoter is the one who has sole control of the fighter's future opponents, but it would be nice to hear from the boxers mouth every once in a while, who they would like to face, instead of hearing "i'll leave that up to my promoter"Because Don King is signed to Sam Peter, and that contract gives Don sole rights to who Sam Peter fights and what the perentage is going to be.

Because if a fighter calls out another boxer and that fight isn't what the promotor sees as a high reward low risk fight, it plants a seed in the fans mind therefore brings pressure to the staff to make the proposed fight actually come to fruit. From a true pugilists point of view this sucks, but like mentioned earlier promoters main goal is to make money first then make the fans happy a close 2nd.
Think of it like public relations, as much as its about the image you show inside the ring to be a profitable and marketable fighter your image outside the ring as to shine too, now calling out fighters and the fight never happening would make you look like a dodger therefore lessening your stock.
Don King is probably the most controlling promotor on the planet as we've seen many times before its his way or the highway, where other promotors sometimes actually listen to want the fans & their fighters want to a certain degree...
The whole boxing promoting theory is a bit ***ed, as you'd think making the fans happy by giving them the fights they wanna see would make the most money... the only thing is the promotors are looking for the longevity out of their fighters therefore choosing the high reward low risk fights until its almost unavoidable and even then in some situations the promotion team will pay "ducking" money...Comment
