Which is correct: I could care less or I couldn't care less?

"The expression I could not care less originally meant 'it would be impossible for me to care less than I do because I do not care at all'. It was originally a British saying and came to the US in the 1950s. It is senseless to transform it into the now-common I could care less. If you could care less, that means you care at least a little. The original is quite sarcastic and the other form is clearly nonsense. The inverted form I could care less was coined in the US and is found only here, recorded in print by 1966. The question is, something caused the negative to vanish even while the original form of the expression was still very much in vogue and available for comparison - so what was it? There are other American English expressions that have a similar sarcastic inversion of an apparent sense, such as Tell me about it!, which usually means 'Don't tell me about it, because I know all about it already'. The Yiddish I should be so lucky!, in which the real sense is often 'I have no hope of being so lucky', has a similar stress pattern with the same sarcastic inversion of meaning as does I could care less"

The correct expression is "I COULDN'T care less". If you COULD care less, then that means you must CARE, dig? I mean, it's just basic ENGLISH.

Is it one of the following?:

      1. All Fat Yanks are illiterate, have no comprehension of the English language, and are borderline ******ed?

      2. They're too busy eating burgers to notice?

      3. They're laughing at "one less Russkie" in the heavyweight title picture... conveniently forgetting that Sam Peter isn't a Fat Yank either.

      4. They could care less?
I seriously reckon out of everyone here, this is why you would be the funniest of us all in real life.

I like the way they spell 'color', so it's swings and roundabouts. It's hard to figure out who is the big winner in the 'who spells **** correctly war'

Probably David Haye, because he's sexy.

Misspelling 'ridiculous' isn't an American thing, it's an ignorant thing. But we do take credit for the spelling of 'color'.

                      It's a play on words.

A slang, which upon being uttered, has the amazing ability to make nerds from other countries stop WHATEVER else they are doing and take a few minutes out of their own lives to dissect and ponder.

And since you seem sadly pre-occupied with the process of overanalyzing yank slang, let me throw a few others your way in the spirit of education and "reaching across the pond" if you will.

                      1. Betcha: A combination "I'll Bet" and "You"

As in: Betcha say something else oddly ****sexual when responding to this comment.

                      2. Fruitboy: Unlike the first one, this one just means someone acting just a little gay.

As in: Wow, the english dude is acting like a real fruitboy by starting a thread like this.

                      3. asshat: again, not to confuse you, this is NOT a hat for your posterior. This merely an attempt to call a person a ******. A way of describing when one's head is so far up one's ass that one is wearing the ass as a hat. in other words, extreme ******ity. It also has a slightly obnoxious/annoying quality that I find quite usefull.

As in: This asshat REALLY thinks Americans dont notice that the saying they are using, IS IN FACT, really the opposite of what the meaning they are trying to imply.

There ya go english bob. Have fun playin soccer and eating horrible food in worse weather. Come back to the states anytime. Specially if you need bailed out of any huge world altering conflicts that you are getting pwned in.
(pwned means dominated on a HUGE scale by the way)

                      -Cheers!
