I believe that a fighter who comes up in difficult circumstances, even when he takes an early loss or two, learns more than being put in with hand-picked opponents. Campbell was fighting guys 7-0 when he was 7-0. That's called tough matchmaking. Juan Diaz wasn't being put in with that kind of opposition because he was seen as the marquee idol who you make sure doesn't lose.

That's why I knew Margarito would beat Cintron the first time around. Cintron had never faced trouble and had a guy in front of him who was all about trouble.

There was a reason Diaz wasn't put in with guys like Campbell. His style is only good with slow fighters who have to stand and fight his fight.

Is Diaz shot? Well, I prefer a fighter to be brought up with controlled adversity. Meaning, that by the time he steps up with a mean mofo, he has seen different situations and knows how to deal with them. Diaz found out what adversity is all about in one night and didn't pass the test. It's more mental than physical, but don't get me wrong, Diaz has been taking a lot of punishment for years. Against Julio Diaz, his face was marked up and he was barely even hit. That's the mark of a guy who doesn't have the best defense and can't continue like that.

Mentally, I don't think he can recover. When a fighter who hasn't been "hit" gets hit, he stays "hit". See Jason Litzau.

There is a difference between taking a career ending beating the way Lacy did, or having an uncorrectable flaw exposed as Litzau did and simply being out fought because you were unable to adapt.

Adapting to different styles can be taught. Diaz would have done much better had he mixed up his strait forward pressure with in and out movement. He needs more lateral movement. He really needs to learn from Ricky Hatton how to make the most of that type of style.

He has many more physical gifts than Hatton has. He is much slicker than Hatton, and can put punches together better than Hatton, but he doesn't have the foot movment he needs to be able to adapt his style to adversity.

Had Diaz had the feet or the smarts to take a half step back from body shots, he could have blocked or made Campbell miss with most of them.

Diaz is use to using his pressure to take away his opponents tools. He needs to be taught to use his head to take them away as well.
