The fight of the Century took place as Ali took on Joe Frazier. Now the thing that made this fight so special was the fact that we had not 1, but 2, undefeated, undisputed champions fighting each other. Ali was still undefeated at the time he was stripped of his title for reasons we all know. Smokin' Joe came along and captured the title to set up the " Fight of the Century " which he eventually would go on to win, thanks to a now famous left hook to Ali's jaw late in the fight. Had Ali not been off for 3 years the outcome might have been different, who knows. Good stuff, but the question is, will we ever see this situation pop up again? It's hard enough for fighters to stay undefeated, much less all the alpahabet BS with fighting mandatories instead of unifying.

I think Cotto vs Mayweather would be a similar situation if Cotto unifies all the other belts.

Mayweather would be the lineal champion but Cotto would have a legitimate claim at being the champion because he has fought and defeated the top WW opposition.

I would say no, because none of these fighters can match the excitement of the Heavyweights. You need 2 famous unbeaten champions to go at it, and right now, the HW division isn't promising for anything like this.

Calzaghe-Kessler, although they weren't as popular it was probably the highest level fight last year.
