Agreed. He has a lot of time for his fans and would never stick his nose up at someone asking for an autograph. To the starter of the thread have you seen his house, the cars he drives and the pub he drinks in? He is not a flashy guy and is very very humble.Comment

I like Ricky. Not really his personality. He has become stale and really boring. Always preaching like he is a man of the people and very humble.
No, no your not.
Every single elite athlete on this planet has an ego the size of Ron Jeremy's ****. And it's not just a long 13 incher. It's a long 13 inch chode. Like a ****in god damn football.
Anyway...yeah...I like him because he is a good athlete inside the ring and comes to fight. He has some good infighting skills.
But he is by no means...one of you guys.
Just thought i'd point that out.
So you're a fan?
Tell us what he is REALLY like then. How can you make judgements on somone based on their pay checks?Comment

Catch him on something genuinely casual and candid like, say, Orange Playlist, and by my reckoning that's pretty much as close to the real Ricky as you're gonna see if you're not one of his mates or a member of his family. Which is to say, an authentically decent, convivial and modest kind of a guy. Very likeable.
Catch him on something a little more high profile and faux-casual like, say, Friday Night With Jonathon Ross, and you're seeing him in 'everyman' publicity mode.
It is what it is. I'm like you, Ricky's Jack The Lad PR device has worn thinner and thinner for me in proportion with its progressive overkill as the stakes of Ricky's fights have gotten higher and higher (culminating with Undefeated) -- but he's just doing his bit, in the same way that a Floyd Mayweather is just doing his. It's merely a different schtick, individual preference being the only variable in how it will be received (grating, entertaining, imagination-capturing). Me, I find exaggerated humility more grating than exaggerated arrogance, so I react better to Floyd's schtick than Ricky's. Others feel opposite.
Bottom line. Ricky's 'salt of the earth' self-caricature is no more bonafide than Floyd's brash 'thug' persona, but, like Floyd, he does a great job of grabbing people by their emotions, which is the objective. And those two were always a lot closer in character than either would've cared to admit prior to 12/08/07, as has been the case with many other pairings of fighters of outwardly diametrically opposed personas.Last edited by hulme#1; 03-08-2008, 01:40 PM.Comment
