from what i've heard, he grew up on the streets of nicaragua.. he lived in a ****** in shacks with dirt floors and no electricity or plumbing or anything, third world country poverty is a lot different than what it is in richer nations like the usa.. he was in a gang, and i guess they would have **** like 40 on 40fights, just one gang going against another, with machetes, rocks, sticks, or whatever they could find

I've heard, though I'm not sure of how much of it is truth, that he said he would marry Alexis Arguello's daughter (who is vaery outspoken about Mayorga's behaviour), and supposedly Arguello actually came down to confront him and, according to witnessess, actually put a beatdown on Ricardo!
Again I'm not sure how much of that story is true, but my wife is Nica (aside from a few of my exes) and I've been privey to a few inside stories from people who know Arguello and Mayorga.
Anyway, the guy is made to fight. Not much technical skill, but he is the true definition of a warrior. Plus, his antics drum up interest in the sport and his fights. One of my personal favorites.Last edited by Phantasm; 03-05-2008, 08:40 AM.

Mayorga wasn't lucky, he had the quick shots to do so. He always had em. He was the first to dethronte 2 Heads Lewis, and the first to Dethrone Forrest. Not surprising.
Nothing and no one was going to stop this kid at his peak.
People can say what the **** they want, but the only time Ricardo started losing was when he bought into his own hype and forgot his natural instinct to win.
You see him in video's prior, you see him "asking god" lol...for help.
He didn't need that, he just needed to stay focused, but he got caught up in his own fame.
He should have put Trinidad down, he was more then capable of doing so, but he was desperate. Seriously, someone needs to teach these South American fighters to Conserve energy and when to throw those quick short bombs.

I agree...when he was 147, he the combination of power, chin and very deceptive speed. I think his best weight was 147. He really wasnt the same fighter since leaving the division; couldnt put Piccirillo away, lost to Tito and De La Hoya, and beat a fat Vargas. Granted he scored some knockdowns of some of those fighters along the way, but never the KO power he had at 147.
Incidently, I've met the guy a number of times and his hands are the hardest hands I've ever felt in a handshake. I felt like I was shaking a hand made of stone.
