    Exclusive Interview: Cory Spinks (03/03/08)

"Vernon Forrest don't want nothing to do with me!"

Editor: It's been a while since we had you on, what's the latest and greatest with Cory Spinks?

Cory Spinks: "Just working man. Kevin and me getting ready for this mandatory defense against Verno Phillips on March 27. The fight's going to be in tha Lou and we're going to make it do what it do."

Editor: What do you know about Phillips as a fighter?

Cory Spinks: "I know he's a tough fighter, he's fought everybody and I'm going to have to be at my best to beat him. He's given Kassim Ouma tough fights, and he's the kind of guy who if you ain't ready for what he's got, he's going to whoop you."

Editor: What kind of crowd are you expecting in tha Lou?

CS: "A sell out. I think it's going to be 10,000 or something."

Editor: Was it difficult for you to get up for this fight?

CS: "Not at all, because I know that if I don't take care of my business aginst this guy there's not going to be any bigger opportunities. This is like when I fought Rodney Jones, he's not the name we were looking for, but I gots to take care of my business, if I ever want to get these chumps like Vernon Forrest, Shane Mosley, Floyd, or De La Hoya in the ring with me.

Editor: How do you feel about Vernon Forrest fighting Sergio Mora?

CS: "That's a joke. He's always telling you how he won't fight me because it's not big enough, but then he goes and fights Michelle Piccirillo who I beat twice [Editor's note: Officially, Spinks is 1-1 vs. Piccirilo, but the verdict for Piccirillo in their first fight remains one of the decade's worst decisions], and now he's fighting Sergio Mora. Maybe he ain't big enough yet, because I know a fight with me and him could put 20,000 people in the Savvis Center. Ain't no way he can sit there and tell me a fight with Sergio Mora is going to sell more tickets or mean more to boxing, than unifying them thangs with me to show the world who the real champion at 154 is."

Editor: Last time we spoke about the Alcine unification you dismissed it, has your view on such a unification bout changed, since our last discussion?

CS: "I'm really not interested in fighting him because we're looking for bigger names and bigger fights, but if these guys continue to run, I might have no choice but to snatch his title first."

Editor: Are you disappointed that you haven't been televised since your fight with Jermain Taylor?

CS: "Yep. But what can I do? Eventually they're going to realize that I fight anybody and none of the guys they've been televising can beat me."

Editor: Are you comfortable making 154?

CS: "I have to work, but it ain't no problem making the weight at all."

Editor: Mosley-Judah who do you like?

CS: "It could go eithe way, but I hope Zab wins, because at least we know he fights the best. All Shane Mosley does is make excuses. He's been running from me since I beat Mayorga and he's probably never gonna stop."

Editor: Is there anything you'd like to say in closing?

CS: "Ssee you in tha Lou on March 27."
