Joppy Retires!
By Dave Spencer / ********* Canada
After 45 fights and three world championships, William Joppy decided to call it a career Friday night after being stopped for only the second time in his career by IBF super-middleweight champion Lucian Bute. “He’s going to go on to bigger and better things and so am I, but for me it won’t be boxing,” said the fifteen year professional from his locker room after the fight. Joppy, whose face looked every bit as battered and bruised as the hideous minefield that followed the Bernard Hopkins unification bout in 2003, agreed that at 37 years old, his best days are now behind him. “Maybe it was father time, but I saw shots in there, body shots, but I just couldn’t pull the trigger. It just wasn’t there.”
