Is There Another Superman on the Way?

By Dave Sholler - When promising young forward Dwight Howard donned a Superman outfit during the NBA All Star dunk competition earlier this month, I couldn’t help but to think that the 23 year-old had symbolically grabbed the slam dunk torch once held by Michael Jordan. As the Orlando Magic star soared through the air numerous times during the contest, it appeared that Howard was ready to accept the role of basketball’s bonafide rim-rattler. In essence, Howard was letting the world know that he is equipped to be the NBA’s newest comic book worthy superhero. [details]

I really enjoyed this article. It's a nicely encapsulated concept.
I respectfully disagree with either Mayweather or Pavlik being the stand-out 'supermen' in boxing as neither have really captured the general public's attention in the way that Jones and De La Hoya (the only two post Tyson stars) did.
Mayweather is eminantly skilled but has had to revert to outside the ring exploits to grab attention.
Pavlik is knocking people out and may get there if his attitude within the ring remains offensively based.

The characteristic that all the aforementioned 'supermen' have or had was that you could not look away during their fights for 1 second. The chance that they would thrill, disgust or amaze you in some way was there for every second of twelve rounds (and the supermen in their prime rarely got to twelve).

Wonderful article and an interesting read. I would believe Daniel Jacobs will be the next superman, he will make Pavlik look like green lantern. Green lantern has some pretty sick powers, but he isn't superman.

I agree,Danny has the charisma u hardly see in boxing, the American public would love him,and whens the last time u seen a black american prospect fight and throw punches like that? Guy reminds me of a young SRL

A great artical but i got to say this :
            Chazz “The Gentleman” Witherspoon

No WAY,he isnt a very good fighter at all IMO,he isnt never in shape, everytime i see him fight he struggles against D-class competition.
His last televised fight looked so close even Witherspoon was worried,i dont see him beating any top fighter at heavyweight, and he has one of the worst attitudes ive seen in the ring,he looks bored in there and never wants to do that much more even when he has to because of a close fight,i hate watching him fight

Gamboa should have been in the list

Where is Miguel Cotto? Or Latino's can't be part of the possible Superman list?

I think the torch was grabbed and eaten up by Vince Carter to never be held by another again. I do agree that this slam dunk competition was one of the best but I still say Vince Carter is the king of slam dunks no doubt.
