    Nigel Benn?

Do people tend to think that Nigel Benn was under or overrated. It's hard to tell imo, he had some big wins but also some soft losses. The fight with the G-man was incredible in the sence that I'm not sure I have ever seen two boxers punch one another so hard in my life. Before the fatel incident the G-man actually knocked Benn out of the ring with a punch. This brings me to thinking that he could clearly take a punch, he could clearly give a punch, perhaps his skills could have been better but he could box when he needed to - so was it infact his mind that let him down sometimes? What do people think?

underated in my opinion. But he was never the same after the Mcellan fight, Nige had the heart of a lion but could be outboxed as Michael Watson proved. (In fact prior to his tragic injury Watson was probably the best of the lot). I dont take Nige's losses to Collins post Gerald as marks on his record, he wasnt mentally in the game anymore.

I agree with you. Maybe Nigel was even a bit past his prime in the fight with Clelland, and If there hadn´t been that devastating, unintentional headbutt that most likely caused the damage in McClelland, he would´ve lost that fight. Until 1994 he was a beast and I too think he is underrated.

in fairness I have no idea how the "eff" he got through the first round, I watched the fight again last week and the ref sure did help him out. He was in la la land, having said that the courage he showed to take it to Mclellan in the second was just inspirational.

I love Benn, he was at his best at Middleweight, a little slower at Supermiddle weight.
Id say he was underrated. The loss against Watson was early in his career, and he didnt try boxing at all, just threw power shots.
His loss against Eubank was genuine, but Eubank was also very good, slippery, tough guy. I had Benn ahead on points when he was stopped.

After he fought McClenan he was done. Losses to Malinga and Collins were due to his burn-out imo.
Actually, if he had won the fight against Malinga, apparently he would of fought Roy Jones. Glad that never happend.

What does anyone think of Collins? He had maybe the ugliest style of fighting.

Benn was an excellent puncher with an unfortunately soft chin. Nonetheless he got through alot of fights on guts alone. He was beating all kinds of **** out of Chris Eubank in their first match before getting caught and stopped (and of course having his eye swollen shut). He should have won the rematch.

The fight with McClellan....G-Man's shots took an obvious and immediate effect on Benn. When Benn landed that right hand on McClellan though, McClellan froze. He was getting hurt everytime Benn landed, but he just was better at not showing it. Benn on the other hand, gave you the impression that he was out on his feet the entire fight. That is one of the most amazingly brutal fights I have seen.

Really, you were only gonna beat Benn if you had a good chin like Steve Collins did.

yip and that was why Eubank was able to win the first fight, in fairness I thought Ben won the second by at least two rounds but then again I would, I loved Nige! and lived round the corner from him for a while in Beckenham. Top fighter.

In that fight with Gerald McClellan could Benn have hit him behind the head anymore?

                  Big

McClellan was looking hurt when he got hit on the chin. Even after knocking Benn through the ropes in the first, Benn still stunned McClellan with a right immediately after. Every right hand Benn landed McClellan looked buzzed.

Jesus this is boxing mate not ballet dancing.
Next you will be moaning bout Evander using his head
Just messing but I prefer to look for the postives in a barnstomer of a fight both men showing heart and bravery above the call of duty.

just a shame it was marred with Mclellan's unfortunate demise.
