Oscar De La Hoya and Stevie Forbes were in L.A. on Tuesday to announce their May 3 fight at the Home Depot Center soccer stadium.
- Oscar's first fight in L.A. since 2000 when he lost a split decision to Sugar Shane at Staples Center
- Oscar's first fight live on HBO since 2001
- the stadium will seat 31,000. Tickets start at $25 and go on sale Tuesday
- Oscar says he'll have three fights in 2008, then retire. Forbes, Mayweather Jr. in September and possibly Manny Pacquiao in December
- Oscar on reuniting with Floyd Sr. "I want to beat the best. I have to beat the best. I know I can beat the best. I just felt at that time when I was going to go up against Floyd Jr. that Floyd Sr. really wasn’t going to be into it, that he didn’t feel it. He wasn’t going to bring his A game. After a few incidents that happened with Floyd Sr. and Floyd Jr., he convinced me that he will be in my corner, that he will be on my side even though it’s his son, his blood. He tells me, ‘That’s my son, that’s my kid, but he deserves a whuping.’”
- Forbes on the fight being billed as De La Hoya's "Homecoming": “Oscar is the biggest name in boxing. I think anywhere we fight it will be his ‘Homecoming.’ When Oscar fights, the seats fill up. I don’t care if we fight in my backyard at my house most of the people would be there for Oscar, including my family probably besides my wife and kids. I mean, it’s great motivation because people want to see a good fight. One thing about Oscar is he’s always fought the best fighters of his era. It’s rare that you see such a dominant face in boxing give a guy a shot. This is like a ‘Rocky’ story. I’ve been shucking away and shucking away and I get to the end of the row and there is something big there. I really appreciate it, but it’s a big motivation.”
