Vazquez readies himself for another Battle

This Saturday night’s tiebreaker between WBC super bantamweight titlist Israel Vazquez and Rafael Marquez has a familiar feel to it. The highly anticipated rubber match, which takes place this Saturday night on Showtime (9 pm ET/PT) from the Home Depot Center in Carson, California, reminds some of the three fight thrillogy that was staged between Marco Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales - minus the personal hatred and animosity, of course.

But like peanut butter and jelly, Bacardi and Coke, these guys just go well together.

"They're Aztec warriors, all four, actually, and they're very similar as far as their bloodlines and they're very similar in the philosophy of what they do," agreed Rudy Perez, who should know, given that he currently trains Vazquez and was the long-time cornerman of Barrera.

"The fact is that they're both warriors, they're both guys that come to fight, and they have big hearts, are strong guys, and are very competitive," he says.

Vazquez would surprise the boxing world by turning things around in the August rematch by halting Marquez in a fight of the year candidate in six frames. This, after calling it a day after seven rounds in the first hook-up in March, just as the fight was seemingly headed to its climatic stages.

"In the first fight, because of the nose and the damage to it, I couldn't breathe properly, it took away from what I wanted to do with the fight," explained Vazquez through an interpreter last week at the South El Monte Boxing Club. "It took away my game plan. On the second one, I prepared harder, I knew what I had in front of me. The only problem was the cuts; they created a little bit of a problem. But I wanted to win more than anything."
