An F. Half of the top 10 HW's could make CW without any problem. Back in the day, watching HW fights used to be exciting when you had guys like a prime Tyson, Holyfield, Bowe, and Holmes. Now you got fighters who fight in slow motion and look like they're going to faint after the 1st round.
How do you rate the Heavyweight Division?

I've seen tons of fights from the 80's and 90's, back when we had clubfighters and journeyman like Oliver McCall, Tony Tucker, Buster Douglas, Trevor Berbick, Greg Page, Pinklon Thomas, Bruce Seldon, Bonecrusher Smith, Gerrie Coetzee, John Tate, Tony Tubbs, etc all as world champs.
Yes you had guys like Holmes, Tyson, Holyfield, Lewis that were very good or great at the top, but overall their opposition wasn't the greatest.Comment

It's kinda sucky compared to how it was when I got into boxing in the mid 90's. You had Lewis, Tyson, Bowe, Holyfield, Moorer, Morrison, Mercer, Witherspoon, all tough guys...then you had Foreman, USA TNF had good heavyweight fights all the time (remember James Thunder, Maurice Harris, Burt Cooper, and young guns like Byrd, Johnson, Briggs)...HBO showed good heavyweight fights on a regular basis...Tua/Rahman/Donald/Golota/Sullivan/Grant/etc. Some of the guys I listed may not be the greatest of all time...but made for exciting fights and they all fought on a fairly regular basis. Now you don't see many heavyweight fights period, and most are boring as hell.
No one reconized heavyweight champ, no known heavyweights fighting on cable....it sucks. I remember being a teenager getting all pumped up to see a good heavyweight card, Cedric Kushner had those heavyweight explosions a lot, there were all kinds of heavyweights fighting...guys you got to know and enjoy watching. It's funny too, because I remember the magazines at the time all saying the state of the division ****** haha....it was way better then, than now, I think.Comment

Some people would be happier with the heavyweight division if the titleholders were black and American.Comment

it doesnt exactly bring the best fights but its somewhere between average and below average.
i think the buzz of the titles getting unified would help the divison out.
believe me there are some very good heavyweights out there who will put a challenge to title holders but i just think some of them have been discovered and given the oppertunity to bring the division to life.
right now outside of the title holders there are only a FEW heavyweights that even stand a chance against the title holders but there are some diamonds in the ruff im sure...
i think the reason fans are so tough on the division is because many are use to seeing a GREAT heavyweight division with joe louis, ali, tyson, holyfield, etc. etc. etc.
but its a new era. today the WW division is the new heavyweight divison that is FULL of GREAT competition and GREAT fights to be made...followed closely by divisons one up and below that division.
heavyweights will make a return eventually.Last edited by frankpaganini; 02-25-2008, 11:43 PM.Comment

Ok first up none of those guys are clubfighters. they may not have been the best but at least they could put on a good show that’s what boxing is about, i much prefer the 80's because they had good fights, as you have seen these fights you should know this. What’s your favorite fight between these guys? Your probably jst joking as you have seen all of there fights some of which were great. Another good 80's fight Smith vs Ruddock.I've seen tons of fights from the 80's and 90's, back when we had clubfighters and journeyman like Oliver McCall, Tony Tucker, Buster Douglas, Trevor Berbick, Greg Page, Pinklon Thomas, Bruce Seldon, Bonecrusher Smith, Gerrie Coetzee, John Tate, Tony Tubbs, etc all as world champs.
