In my little stretch of NJ, which goes from Jersey City to North Bergen, the only names that come up when boxing is mentioned are Arturo Gatti and Jimmy Braddock.
Imagine my surprise when I look through IBHOF's archives to find a genuine hall of famer in my own backyard. Joe Jeanette was from Union City, NJ where I'm from. I read more on this fighter, who was one of the great black fighters of the early 1900s that never got his shot at the title. Turns out I lived 2 blocks from a street that was named after him.
I'm endlessly fascinated by this guy, who beat Jack Johnson. To think I'm supposed to be up on my boxing and a HOFer went under my radar.
