Duddy Struggles To Win, Pavlik Shot Next

On the undercard to Wladimir Klitschko-Sultan Ibragimov at New York's Madison Square Garden, middleweight "Irish" John Duddy (24-0, 17KOs) won an unpopular ten-round majority decision over hand-picked opponent Walid Smichet (17-4-3, 13KOs). The scores were 95-95, 98-92 and 98-92. [details]

Duddy even hinted at not being ready for Pavlik. "When he fought the title he had 30 something fights and I am just having my 24th."

Some close to Duddy have hinted to me that he has a serious drinking problem. He is better than he looks in the ring but has wasted a great deal of his talent through the New York fighter matchmaking that plagues Dmitriy Salita and others.

He has very little to no chance of being competitive with Pavlik because he's too small and has no defense to speak of. Duddy used to be seen as a big puncher, but steps up in competition shows that he just isn't.

Duddy put a lot of body work in the first 4 rounds but payed a price by taking some big shots. I thought he lost the first four rounds but surprised me how well he boxed the rest of the fight I also thought the bodywork really slowed the other guy down. I gave him the fight 6 rounds to 4. Really good exciting fight.

Looks like Duddy overdosed on too many Rocky films before this fight. Blocking power shots with your face is gonna lead to alot of stitches. He looked like someone who stepped out of boxing of a bygone era, if he had the vintage boxing trunks on and the fight was in B&W the effect would be pretty good. He is one tough kid, but the defense is woefull versus hooks and looping shots at close range. Some of the shots he was hit with were telegraphed quite badly, but he had no effective defense. He tried to out slug a guy with more power early, but the defense never had an answer to those types of shots except some good head movement late. Needs to go back to the gym and focus on some basics. World class chin though.

Duddy had trouble with Yori Boy Campas less then 2 years ago, the same guy who got knocked out easily 14 years ago by a young Trinidad.
