Jon Thaxton will challenge Yuri Romanov for European title.

British lightweight champion Jon Thaxton will challenge Belorussian Yuri Romanov in Norwich on 4 April for the prestigious European title.
Thaxton has regularly been linked with a fight against Commonwealth champion Amir Khan in the last six months.

But the Norwich southpaw will instead attempt to rise further up the rankings by fighting Romanov, 25, rated as the WBA's number two in their January list.

Thaxton, 33, said: "It is going to be a tough fight but I am ready for it."


He added: "I'm over the moon to have the opportunity to fight for the European title. My promoter Mick Hennessy has delivered what he promised and pulled out all the stops to secure this fight for me.

"It will be fantastic to fight in front of my home fans again. I always have great support in Norwich and I know they will turn out in their masses to see me add the European belt to my collection.

"To win this European title fight will open the door for me to challenge for a major world title."

Romanov has a record of 20 wins (13 by knockout) and two losses, with victories over Steve Murray and Bobby Vanzie earlier in his career.
