Fake weights are for Fake fighters.

im tired of bull**** catchweights, there are enough weight divisions already without pointless spectacles at 170 pounds. or rematch clauses at 166 pounds or 104.7 pounds.... **** isnt darius vs ottke at a catchweight too?? just like old ass henry maske came out of the WacArnolds business to fight virgil hill at 190?

if you dont want to fight in a real weight class then take your ass to the retirement home. that is all.

I didn't see this thread earlier. I agree, too many catch weight fights when there are too many weight classes as it is.

There are too many weight divisions. But I dont give a **** what weight a fight is at as long there are 2 good fighters fighting.

i guess but point is.. why the hell was hopkins/wright at 170? everyone knows bhop coulda made 168 and would have been much more reasonable for winky to fight at... but since bhop was dictating terms he knew every pound higher than 160 was more advantage to him.. so he forces wright to fight at a catchweight cause wright needed the fight more.

This is really a ****** ass thread. Theres nothing wrong with catchweights, It's called COMPROMISE. If Tiddly Wink thought it was that much a disadvantage he should have stayed home. You really expect Hopkins (who just left 160 mind you) Come back down from 175 to 160 just to go back up to 175 to make winky feel more comfortable??? Like I said He wasn't forced to put on all the weight but he agreed to the terms. He obviously thought he was skilled enough to pull it off. No harm in trying.

Probably because it would have seemed weird to be fighting for The Ring's Light Heavyweight championship in a Super Middleweight fight.

For a second, when I saw the thread title, I thought you were talking about all the junior/super weight divisions, and I was like wtf are wrong with those?

But yes, I agree with you, catchweights are a tad ridiculous. They aren't really helpful at all, because the two guys fighting should be trying to move themselves up in the rankings of their division, and if they are too far apart to meet at an actual division, that probably means it is going to be a size disadvantage anyway, which means they shouldn't be fighting.

catchweight fights, in almost all cases, hold back boxings progress

honestly... pavlik/taylor was a nice fight, but it did nothing for the sport. pavlik could have defended a title.. taylor could have moved to 168 and began progressing towards a title shot.

mayorga/vargas was a spectacle... right up there with muhammad ali vs lyle alzado

wright/hopkins did nothing for boxing, wright just needed a payday. hopkins vs any top-5 light heavyweight would have been much more meaningful.

jones-trinidad.. may as well have been at 168 or 175, the winner moved a little closer to what exactly? a shot at getting their ass kicked by a full time fighter?

its just out of hand, the occasional catchweight fight i can understand between two CHAMPS from different divisions.. but it seems like every 3rd fight in the past year has taken place in a mythical weight class

All of those cases are two fighters who are ridiculously far apart in weight, which are fights that don't need to be happening in the first place.

The other case of that is something like what happened when Edison Miranda fought Allan Green at 162. Both were moving toward middleweight contendership, but fought at 162. They should have just said "**** it" and moved up to 168. The reason being is that Green immediately moved up, meaning that he was likely having problems with weight to being with. Miranda stayed at 160 and got blown out by Pavlik, and I think it is because he was so weight-drained. If you are ****ing around with catchweights, you are trying to fool yourself into thinking that you are qualified to be fighting at a weight that you really aren't qualified to be fighting at.
