HBO has great video quality and everything, but their microphones never seem to pick up the big sounds of punches and fighters breathing and everything, which sounds awesome and really helps people understand the thudding power of fighters' shots. ESPN, even with their generally lousy fights, has excellent sound quality.
HBO needs to make punch sounds more pronounced

maybe it has to do with the amount of people in the crowd ?
i remember watching a 4 round bout on espn, and you can hear everything going on the ring, because there was almost no one in the crowd for that fight. -
I can not imagine how they would make it happen, at all. Unless there is microphones all around the ring.Comment

what they do is they put a microphone on the referee. And in those instances, you can clearly hear and almost feel the punches.
But the ref is allowed to opt out of wearing the mic, and he often does, and thats when they set up other mics but farther away and it becomes more difficult to hear the punchesComment

thats a good point, but even when the ESPN arena is completely full the punches are still louder. plus, they use directional microphones that shouldnt pick up the crowd sound over the punch sound, because those microphones only pick up sound coming from the way theyre pointed at.
and one other thing is that even when there is no crowd at all...like for an undercard...you still cant hear much.
heres Juan at an HBO fight with a tiny crowd.
all you can hear are his grunts.
you could actually hear his punches against Irwin and Lorcy on ESPN.Comment
