It makes sense. I mean if I knew I was going to take some punches while in that ring, I'd take some pain relievers to help me shrug the pain off.

Ali has Morphine after both the Norton and Holmes bout as he was in so much pain.

There are 2 kinds of pain Killers... One kind ..Opiates.. or synthetic opiates.. do not attack pain.. but rather stimulate your pleasure centre of the brain.. thus distracting you from the pain... They also have serious side effects.. such as drowsiness, lack of concetration, delayed reaction,Nausea,Itchiness, sensetivity to light and narrowed feild of vision...
Not recomended for someone in a boxing match.. wouldn't you think?
the second type are.. anti-inflamitories.. which reduce swelling.. But will not stop swelling if taken before a condition exists..
Valium is a Tranqueliser... If you do not have a tolerance built up towards it.. will put 99% of the people who take it, to sleep within 30 minutes..
If you do have a tolerance and can remain conscious.. You will feel apathetic and not bothered by things.. and will not have any sense of urgency about anything.. which is why Valium is given to people under serious stress..
Again not something that would be considered useful in the realms of a Boxing match..
I hope this answers your question
