  • Boxing is all about money

WBC president Jose Sulaiman believes greed has killed the honour in boxing.

Sulaiman, 76, has battled long and hard to make the sport safer than the savage version he first encountered over 60 years ago.

But the Mexican insists the days of fighters stepping into the ring for the love of the business are long gone.

He said: "Today promoters, managers and boxers only want money, money, money.

"Years ago it was for the pride, glory and the honour.

"Back then there were thousands of professional boxers, while today there are hundreds.

"The technique is better today but the heart, mental attitude and strength of the fighters was far superior then."

Reducing championship bouts from 15 to 12 rounds is just one of the changes Sulaiman has overseen during his time in charge of the WBC.

He was also the driving force behind weigh-ins taking place 24 hours before the opening bell to allow contestants to rehydrate and eat.

So the rapid growth of mixed martial arts leaves a sour taste in his mouth.

Sulaiman added: "The Roman circus was barbaric and this is barbaric. It's like two animals trying to kill each other.

"In Mexico it has not happened and I'm fighting for that not to happen.

"But with the public in the United States, I don't know. They like it very much but I criticise it. It's not human."

Sulaiman also believes it is time for boxing's various organisations to clean up their acts.

He said: "We have many things to do in the future and the WBC will continue fighting as much as possible to bring order, good rule and safety.

"We need unity at the moment as everybody is trying to kill everybody."

no big secret here... BOXERS HAVE TO BE ABOUT MONEY because 90% of them dont have much education or anything else to fall back on...

they sacrifice not just their own life but usually that of their family while training 24/7 and dreaming to make it big one day... of course when that opportunity comes they are gonna look to make some money.

come on now, afterall this is boxing, the ultimate sacrifice of body and mind JUST FOR ENTERTAINMENT of others. Ill be damned if i get hit in the head almost everyday and dont even make good enough money to say okay... i guess all this was worth it.

IMO, I don't think one can get to and compete at the elite level without FIRST having a true love of fighting.

when one you finally gets to the elite level, if one gets there at all, the money becomes the reward. in boxing, the love of money will never be enough to get a fighter to the elite level.

once there, who would balme anyone for getting all they can?

              Which sport looks more violent?

              MMA

              Boxing

Anyway, Sulaiman is full of s***.

Critics accuse him to have made changes like the extra divisions to make more money from sanctioning fees and reduced rounds to accommodate television. He is also known to be very close to promoter Don King, many King fighters are placed highly in his ratings. The Ring Magazine has thus called him "a swell guy to have lunch with but you better count the silver afterwards".

Oh yeah, coming from a guy like Suliaman who is so honorable.

Was it all about the glory and pride in the days when black fighters were froze out of the title picture and the champs (including Jack Johnson) fought more lucrative bouts against white contenders?

Was it all about the glory and pride when Jack Dempsey and other HW champs often fought in well-paid exhibitions instead of defending their title?

Or how about the days of the IBC and James Norris, with strong "influence" from Frankie Carbo and Blinky Palermo?

And Jose is in the Boxing Hall of Fame.
