Bob Arum: "Cotto-Mayorga Possible, Not For July"

Moments ago, Bob Arum of Top Rank informed BoxingScene.com that a fight between WBA welterweight champion Miguel Cotto and Ricardo Mayorga is possible, but not for July. Arum said the plan is still for Cotto to fight Alfonso Gomez on April 12, and then fight the winner of the undercard bout between IBF welterweight champion Kermit Cintron and Antonio Margarito, in July. From a popularity standpoint it makes for sense for Cotto to fight Mayorga but from a boxing competiton standpoint I think the Margarito vs. Cintron winner makes more sense.

Exactly. A Mayorga fight would be exciting and bring in probably a lot of PPV buys, but a fight with the winner of the Cintron/Margarito matchup would mean more as far as the WW picture goes anyway.

Say Cintron wins the rematch. Cintron-Cotto does half the money Cotto-Mayorga does. Cintron doesnt have a chance agaisnt Cotto, at least Mayorga does.

It will be interesting how you would explain your point of view and enlight us on HOW MAYORGA GOT A BETTER CHANCE THAN CINTRON... IMO, Mayorga don't got the discipline to beat Cotto. (just like Judah was not able to do it.) In the other hand, Kermit got the power to break Cotto's chin. So please elaborate on your BS.

what people fail to realize is that Bob Arum is responsible for any match up Cotto is involved in, Cotto makes it clear 100% of the times that he just fights who is put in front of him, he doesn't throw in ideas nor does he take them he just throws any potential match up talk to Arum and just trains for whoever fights him, can't hate on Cotto for these fights. I think it's smart for Cotto to fight Gomez because now he is going to possibly add the best contender fighter that the show has produced, a person who came up and beat 2 known and respected names under a bright light, Cotto can add him then possibly Cintron or Margarito just to go on and take a swipe at Mayorga, that could be fighter of the year right here, definitely the #1 Welterweight in the worl dif Floyd just fights Oscar and leaves all the real opponents for everybody else..

I think Cotto beats them all, ask me who and I'll tell you why and how I think it will happen in depth and thoroughly but for the sake of opinion very briefly I can tell you I think Cotto beats everybody in the WW division at the moment.

Frist off I see you have Cintron in your sig but..........................
Cintron has fought with the prime time players once. His one shot was against Antonio Margarito and got crushed. Beat to tears.
His last outing against Jesse Feliciano was pathetic, everyone will have to agree that Cintron wouldnt even thouch Cotto.
What was even Cintrons biggest win? Teddy Reid? Hes really not elite.

As for Mayorga against Cotto. Cotto has been know to have trouble with those who pressure him. Mayorga used to and still can put on all out straight forward attacks. He swarms with ferocity and put Lewis,Forrest,Spinks,Vargas and even Trinidad on the canvas. If Cotto can be rocked by Torres I think Mayorga has a good shot.

Just my thoughts. Styles make fights.
