    Williams-Quintana: The Pre-Fight Report Card

By Cliff Rold - It’s not a big fight but Paul Williams-Carlos Quintana, this Saturday’s HBO Boxing After Dark Welterweight main event (9:45 PM EST/PST), is a bout with ramifications. Williams, off of his win last July over Welterweight stalwart Antonio Margarito, has earned a spot near the top of his class. Quintana is his first fight since and begins the next phase of Williams’ career. [details]

A little mistake in the article, it lists Quintanna at 21, when he's 31.

Williams hasnt even defended his title once and they are portraying him as this tragic Margaritoesque figure because he hasnt gotten an offer to fight Mayweather yet...ha

I definitely have williams winning this. But if Quintanna did win, would it be considered one of the biggest upsets ever in the sport? Even bigger then buster douglass koing tyson?

Not too long ago, after beating Joel Julio, many people were picking Quintanna to beat Cotto, now after 1 loss to one of the best fighters out there, people are acting like Quintanna has no shot which is kind of funny. I think this fight is a lot closer than what people are thinking.

Yep, exactly what I've been saying since the fight was signed. But that's to be expected, though. Generally speaking, Boxing fans are as fickle as they come. Watch how the very same ones picking Williams to win "easily" will be the first to dismiss him as overrated once he has a tougher time than they expect come Saturday night.

Can't believe the odds on this fight are the same as they are for Andre Berto vs. Michel Trabant.

Quintana has no chance of winning - it's a mismatch.

It wouldn't even be close to that big of an upset. You're looking at odds of about 9:1 favorite for this fight compared to 42:1 for Tyson.

see one thing you have to remember about Paul, he throws 1,000,000 punches and all but he gives up his height and reach by fighting on the inside, he's so actively throwing punches that he would have to be in close to you to be successful and not just hit air, see Quintana is a smart, hard hitting Boxer who is tall in his own right, taller than both Floyd and Cotto and even though Floyd has longer arms I think Quintana presents a decent challenge in his own regard. Joel Julio was undefeated his whole life including his ametuer days and Quintana beat him decisively with ring smarts, Cotto beat Quintana with ruthless body shots and Williams isn't exactly known for his body punching, he isn't even a stronger puncher than Cotto which is why after all those punches he can't phase you, I don't think he will hurt Quintana just overwhelm him and even though it might be enough to win don't be surprised if Carlos pulls a rabbit out his hat and stuns the world.

Carlos is smart and Paul is too but he is just as much reckless as he is smart because dude fights in low when he can secure his wins more tightly by fighting out far and avoiding confrontation, when a pressure fighter attacks THEN throw 1,000,000 punches or enough to turn the tide back into base 1 where you can just box all day, Paul doesn't do that so believe me when I tell you he better start, maybe it ain't such an urgency against someone like Carlos Quintana but then again Carlos is good too so it would be a great time to start, you can't wait until you fighting the best again to change your **** up. Paul is good but I want to see how he will react with the punches in bunches that Cotto throws, those quick combos of power shot after power shot to the body and face continuously round after round, Tony couldn't find him but Miguel is a smarter Boxer, true he is a smaller man too but he is a better Boxer and skills is whats needed to penetrate threw to William's..

damn I just wrote a long one again, let me cut it now with this, Quintana's chances aren't good to win, IMO I don't think he will win but I DO think he is a worthy foe so depending on how Williams wins I will be able to determine more or less what he can do better against up to par guys, he faded against Tony in the later rounds compared to his early assault and he besically showed a lot of flaws that the better half of this division can exploit, whether Quintana can or not remains to be seen but I think Paul needs to enforce this hype with a strong performance, I pick him to win the fight but Quintana is no easy task and Paul better know that, if he doesn't it can mean goodbye unification because in the WW division now if you lose your name is out of the hat..
