Jameel McCline: I couldn't believe that Peter can't punch

I was in the gym today following Nate Campbell's training camp with John David Jackson when Jameel showed up for his training. I asked McCline about who wins Peter-Maskaev (Maskaev also is training at that gym). He said Maskaev has a decent chance because he can punch but said something interesting. "I couldn't believe Peter didn't have a punch. I trained for a knockout artist and that messed me up."

McCline acknowledged that he lost the fight fair and square. He knows he has a stamina issue and said that though he's a puncher, he's not a finisher. "It's because I started late in boxing, about 26-27."

I've been around Jameel alot and he is very candid about his shortcomings. He said he was caught up in the Klitschko hype and was frozen in the moment. That sounds about right.

McCline didn't look that great in sparring today with Dominic Jenkins. Not because he doesn't have skills because Jameel is wonderfully talented and surprisingly mobile for a big man. He just seems too nice at times in the ring. He let his guy get off first too much and wasn't using his jab enough. He is an avid learner, but sometimes is too nice for his own good.

I told McCline that he was punching at the target too much and not through it. "I knock people down like that though." I told him that he wouldn't have to worry about finishing guys if he punched through the targets because they wouldn't get up.

Nonetheless, he says he wants to KO Ruiz when they fight next month and intends on coming in at 270 to give him some extra energy. He was 274 in the gym today.

Damn thats cool. Its different talking to pros. At Savannah's here in houston, at any given time you see Juan Diaz, Rocky Juarez, Holyfield, and the new guy Vanes Martirosyan. Its just different when you talk to these guys candidly.

I'll tell you something about Nate Campbell, I'm picking him to beat Diaz. He is looking nice against some very tough sparring partners. He did 10 rounds today with 3 guys changing in fresh and was schooling them. He explained Diaz's strategy and it's apparent he's done his homework.

I'm in all of the gyms here, these pros are just regular guys. They all love talking boxing and respect people who know their boxing. They know I'm there to do a job that helps them as much as it helps me so we all get along.

I like McCline. He seems like a very decent person. If he beats John Ruiz I'll like him even more.

I remember his fight with Wlad, I knew Mccline could win it but he froze, but I thought it was due to fear because Wlad had been KOing everyone.
