115-Pounds: The Other Best Division in Boxing

By Cliff Rold - Next week, the hype and chatter will be in full swing and the bulk of it will be focused where it should be: the non-title rematch between World Middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik and former champion Jermain Taylor. As an immediate return to one of 2007’s best fights, Pavlik-Taylor II earned the hype in blood.

Guaranteed then to get less attention among mainstream outlets is the stellar undercard to that feature attraction.

Beneath the bigger boys, the best weight not prefixed with the word “Welter” will be given one of its best stages in years. If the two bouts featured live up to the action so far this year at 115 lbs., boxing fans are in for a treat.

That’s because, for true fight lovers, Fernando Montiel-Martin Castillo and Cristian Mijares-Jose Navarro is a double header unto itself. Anytime three of the top four battlers in a single class share the same bill, and Montiel, Castillo and Mijares are recognized as such, it’s hard to believe that something else can be the main event. That says a lot about how good Taylor-Pavlik I was, how good II could be, and how tough it is for fistic quality alone to stand out. [details]

if promoters discriminate smaller guys from the bigger guys, fight fans don't. boxing fans knew no discrimination as long as the smaller guys deliver exciting fights. we have montiel, castillo, mijares, and donaire who give the fans their money's worth. every time i watch flyweights making good fights, i remember ricardo lopez, the "maestro", who give his best to the excitement of boxing fans. montiel, castillo, mijares and donaire were just only few little men who delivers big in the boxing ring.

they got lots of talent in that division right now mijares, montiel, arce darchi and so many other guys..

the lowere weight classes doesnt get that much attention in boxing not as much as the welterweights but they can pretty much put the same excitement as the ww's do in the ring.

Man, the smaller divisions have always been the most exciting, competitive divisions. All through history the best boxers (the majority) have come from the lightweight and surrounding divisions.

This division is no different now. It is full of great talent. This card is going to be a huge night of brilliant fights! Mijares is going to rule this roost for a while me thinks. It will be interesting to see how Montiel/Castillo plays out.....?

It's just too bad that unification is rare at the lower weights; let's hope the card next week leads to a little and not just a payday for Arce with Castillo.
