do you have any idea what a great amateur povetkin was? and he has only 15 fights as a pro. there's nothing to be emabrassed about by getting beat by povetkin
the heavyweight division in deep crisis

As great as amateur fighter Povetkin was, there is a reason why a lot of boxers turn pro early. Yes it's important to have extensive amateur career, but it's also important to pro early. (at least at the age of 23 or younger) There is a big difference between amateurs and pros, in Povetkins case, you can see why. He's still young though, he has a lot of time to develop, despite being already 28 years old. But if he had turn pro earlier, he would already been at his prime now, with his skills showing much better than they are now.Last edited by Boxingwizard; 01-26-2008, 09:03 PM. -
The heavyweight division is more forgiving about age but that's only if you're big and punch hard.
Povetkin has a very physical style so he will be done by his mid-30's.
If Povetkin fights Wladimir now he will be knocked out but I think he could take on someone like Chagaev or Ibragimov, after a few more fights atleast.
He has stepped up in class early and that's a good thing because there aren't too many years left for him.Comment

I can't imagine Povetkin or anyone else defeating Wlad for the next couple of years.
But Povetkin is a great addition to the heavyweight division - he reminds me of Joe Frazier, an exciting fighter with a tremendous work rate and sound technical skills. Both won Gold in the Olympics.
However I also think Wlad vs. Povetkin may be a lot like Foreman vs. Frazier.Comment

IMO, the division is better than it has been since Lewis retired. We have a unification fight coming up with Wlad and Ibragimov and then we have Peter vs Maskaev with the winner of that possibly meeting the winner of Wlad vs Ibragimov. We have a young prospect in Povetkin, who does need more polishing, but could be something in the future. It doesn't mean it's a very good division but it's better than it has been.Comment

No. Chambers was doing okay in the first half, but he hardly threw a punch in the last three rounds. On the various boxing websites, the average score was 117 to 111. That's how I scored it.
Chambers' fans scored it closer, but I've not seen anyone score it either a draw or a Chambers win. Some people thought Chambers could have won, but he blew it by not throwing enough punches in the later rounds.Last edited by The Hammer; 01-26-2008, 11:22 PM.Comment
