  • Donaire-Narvaez, Anyone?

Omar Andres Narvaez has just successfully defended his WBO Flyweight title-- his 12th straight.

Following his victory over Carlos Tamara in what was described as a "toe-to-toe battle" by a boxing website, Narvaez announced that he is looking at breaking the Argentine record of Carlos Monzon, who had a string of 14 consecutive successful defenses.

Any thoughts on a Nonito Donaire-Narvaez unification clash?

That would be an excellent fight, differing styles with one guy having good boxing skills and lights out power, and the other being a well experienced expert fighter.

By experienced expert boxer, I meant that Narvaez has a long history with being a world champion and he knows how to win the big fights.

The idea stems from the reports that Donaire is seeking to make Flyweight history by unifying the belts. (I'm not sure, but I think it was Pone Kingpetch of Thailand who was the last champion to be universally recognized as, "World Champion" in the Flyweight division. That was in the '60's)

Donaire has little chance of achieving total unification with the two Japanese alphabet champions (Sakata and Naito) because Japan does not recognize the IBF.

Maybe he can look at what amounts to a "majority unification"? I know that's an oxymoron but, for want of a better way to put it...

Donaire has both the IBF and IBO belts and Narvaez has the WBO strap.
That'll net him (if he wins) three of five; or if one does not put any premium on the IBO belt, 2 out of 4.

The Mijares fight may come after Narvaez. Both can even be held within this year.
