While watching Skelton - Chaegav last night on Setanta, they were talking about the heavyweight division and stated they think Alexander Povetkin will clear out the heavyweight division! They said hes ranked inside the top ten after only 14 fights so hes on the fast track and they think hes going be the standout guy at heavyweight. I've never seen him fight, but I'm sure some of you guys have. Is he good enough to be the man at heavyweight or is he just hype?

He's a very determined guy and I like his hooks and uppercuts with both hands, but right now he gets hit way, way too much with the jab.
Give it a couple of years, he will be alright. Wlad takes him at present, and if Chambers can jab like no tomorrow and actualy be in shape for the fight, he may have a chance.

I am a big fan of Povetkin and he has really impressed me so far in his young 14 pro fight career(14-0 11 KO's). He hasn't lost a single round and he has an impressive shutout win over pure boxer Larry Donald and a dominant TKO win over former HW champ master boxer Chris Byrd, he won every round in his fight with Byrd.
I can see Povetkin potentially beating everyone in the division except for Wladimir Klitschko....I think Povetkin would struggle to get by Wlad's hard jab and fight on the inside, he dosen't have the best defence in the world and he would eat steelhammer right hands and left hooks from Wlad...Povetkin would get beatdown by Wlad if they fought right now IMO.Comment

He has excellent boxing skills and a great work rate. He has decent power, but not the one punch KO power of someone like Wlad or Foreman.
Povetkin is easily one of the five best heavyweights in the world right now, but although he'll likely get past Eddie Chambers, I can't imagine him winning against a focused Wlad.Comment

Modern heavyweights don't hit their prime until their early 30s. Him being 28 is a positive. It isn't like in other weight classes.
As for Povetkin, so good so far. He'll face his first real live possibly top tier opponent next Saturday in Chambers, but he has looked good against better than average competition for a fighter with 14 pro fights. It isn't really particularly special competition for a 28 year old though. Donald wasn't interested in winning and Byrd is a shot fighter, but Povetkin did what he was supposed to do against them and looked good in doing it. I think he'll beat Chambers in a really close fight (not a slight to Povetkin -- it seems like every fight with Chambers against a not huge heavy will be close due to his Winky style), but I take a weight and see approach against Wlad. It is easy to say he won't win, but even if he were to destroy Fast Eddie we would have nothing real to make a prediction on other than experience. I wish he'd take a couple more fights before Wlad to get ready.Comment

Alexander Povetkin was probably the best amateur super heavyweight of all time. In addition to winning Olympic Gold, he finished first in about 12 other international boxing tournaments.
Povetkin was also kickboxing champion of the world at age 19.Comment
