When you hear that he's from Youngstown you say, "Well, he's a tough kid," there's a certain muscle memory...

I certainly wouldn't say that he is the best fighter since Marciano, he isn't even close at the moment. However, I do like this comparison to Marciano to a degree. Obviously their styles are different (Pavlik a tall middleweight and Marciano a short heavyweight), but much like Pavlik, Marciano wasn't that highly regarded on his rise up, in fact when he fought Roland LaStarza, people expected LaStarza to go on to win to become the future champ, and when Rocky won that fight on a controversial decision people still weren't sold. It wasn't until Marciano knocked out Rex Layne ( who was something like a 9-5 favorite) that people really began to take him seriously much like Pavlik wasn't taken too seriously until he defeated the highly regarded Edison Miranda. Then both men went on to knockout their division champs, Rocky knocked out Walcott and Pavlik Taylor to cement their place as the real deal and best in the division. In a sense their careers are going somewhat on the same paths so far, especially if Pavlik knocks out Taylor in the rematch.

I wouldn't even compare his accomplishments to Julian Jackson let alone Marciano.

Were you in a coma last year or something? Calzaghe was begging Taylor for a fight last year and even offered him 5 million dollars and was willing to go to the States to make it happen. Taylor then said he wanted 10 million and decided to take a less risky fight (Pavlik) instead and we know how that worked out for him.
