Personally, I never was HUGE for Margarito. I never thought he was the second coming of CHavez, that most of his fanboys tend to peg him as. To me, he was a a decent fighter, limited and threw a bunch of punches.
Now, he's lost 5 of his fights. Bringing his overall record to 35-5-0. Three of his losses were in his first 12 fights, so I'd excuse those. The opponents who beat him had a combined record of 91-5-1. (This is counted at the time that they fought Margarito.) He's never been stopped, and if you don't count his first 12 fights (what's fair is fair), 26-2. That's a decent record. He's beaten another young fighter who's getting some shine right now, too. That being Kermit Cintron.
He's a slow puncher, in general. Throws close to 80-100 punches per round, very good power. Nice body attack and has a GREAT chin. The problem is that, with all this said.. it's still not worth the praise that this guy gets.
People call him the most FEARED MAN IN BOXING???? Really? Who fears him? Do they fear the risk of losing to this guy, when the fight wouldn't make them that much money? Yes, in a way. This is a BUSINESS after all. But do they actually fear the challenge of HIM, is the TRUE question. My answer, is no. I don't think they do. Respect him, sure. He's a solid fighter. But that's probably it, no more no less.
However, I still don't have a problem with the guy. I really don't. And now, I hear he will be facing Judah next - in May. This fight really will tell you a lot about both. For Judah, it'll tell you either how far he's faded or how much he could have offered the game, but probably never will. It'll tell you if Judah will get another shot at a serious fighter (other than Margarito) and how well he MIGHT do.
But for Margarito, it'll tell ME (and it should tell EVERYONE else) how much Margarito has to offer, period. If he doesn't do well, against Judah... FORGET IT. And I say do well, meaning, beat him and look GOOD doing it. Beating Judah wont be enough in this situation. Everyone can look good beating Judah. Mayweather looked good, Kostya looked GREAT, Cotto looked very good. If Margarito can't rival that, he should have no claim to being a TRUE threat to any major star. Not to shoot the guy down, but Judah should be faded further than he MAY have been in the Cotto fight and Tony should be able to handle him as so. If he can't, I think his fans need to jump back into the reality pool and take a few laps.
Once again, this is not a thread to bash him. I'm just calling it like I see it. This is all my opinion. I'm as right or wrong s everyone else on here. I actually hope Margarito can pull it off. I've seen Judah aagisnt a lot of the top guns in the division, so I'd be more interesting to see someone else get the shots. I'm just saying, if he can't DISPOSE of Judah, like he should..... It's a done deal, if you ask me. That's all.
