    Fighting To Long Affects Legacy

A lot of people on here say Roy Jones Junior is the greatest of the modern era. Or they defend his legacy saying its still intact. Sure he was great. But his legacy after a couple of knock out losses is not that great.

Im just using Roy as an example.

Because a lot of boxing fans think fighting long, to late, where they should have been retired does not affect legacy. But im arguing it does. E.G Holyfield, De La Hoya, Roy Jones Junior. The longer they fight and more losses they rack up the less great they are to me. Taking into account the great wins they have.

In any other sport, the best athletes who go well past there prime and start loosing, tarnish there legacy. This has to be the same in boxing. And it needs to go for those boxers fighting out of there weight division aswell. E.G A lot of people say Winky's loss to Hopkins does not mean anything because they fought at SMW or LHW or . But it has affected his legacy and pound for pound rankings. And put simply, fighters should not fight outside there comftorable weight division, other wise there P4P rankings and legacys should be affected.

So RJJ, Holyfield, De La Hoya (less of a case), need to retire at the right time. Continual losses damage there legacy. Fighters fighting outside there weight range, risk the consequences of being negatively downgraded in the pound for pound rankings and there overall legacy. This has to happen, otherwise the P4P system and legacy system have serious flaws.

    Cheers, Ult.

Not trying to be to Harsh guys. RJJ and holyfield are great. Just not as great as they were before they were getting smacked around.

it really doesn't do much to hurt their legacy at all. those who say it hurts their legacy a lot are either too harsh or don't know boxing history.

look at most of the all-time greats and look at how many of them fought on too long.

it's very common, and it's rare when a fighter actually does go out on top, or at least close to the very top, as opposed to being a shot or very past their prime fighter.

Only fools would allow it to affect their legacy, Look at Ali he should of stopped wayy before he did, so should have Louis, Barrera, Holyfield (as u said). But for me it doesnt affect their legacy at all.

I think those brutal KO's may have hurt Jones legacy but I think most people will agree that he wasn't in his prime.

Good post. RJJ was a great fighter and I think is remembered that way, despite those ugly knockouts.
