Well it looks like we as boxing fans are faced with the strong possibility that this fight is coming again.
To avoid too much backlash from hardcore fans and mainstream media, DLH and GBP MUST make this a DIFFERENT event. The undercard must be STRONG, and given how much money DLH and GBP made off the last extravaganza, why not PONY UP for a couple of strong undercard bouts to bring the hardcore audience back and, for a much better reason, to RE-INTRODUCE mainstream sports fans to how great boxing can be.
We all know that the first fight wasn't exactly what boxing needed. Most PPV buys ever, blah, blah, the bottom line is that boxing WAS NOT well accounted for by the main event or the ridiculous undercard (Rocky Juarez? Meh...) It also, of course, was held at a Vegas casino, and 95% of the seats were taken up by bigwigs and celebs.
This time around, I plea with DLH and GBP to make this unique. Why not have this thing at Dodger Stadium? ANYTHING BUT A CASINO, PLEASE. I want atmosphere with this fight. Something unique that adds to another angle for the mainstream media to pay attention. I'll be honest, if it's at MGM again, and I was a sports editor at a newspaper, I wouldn't bother sending anyone. Same event, different year.
Also, since GBP is bleeding money from last year's success, why pony up and put on a great undercard? Too bad Top Rank can't be involved seeing as Mayweather will have some say in this thing, but there are still several GBP fighters worth seeing and other fighters with other promoters who'd love the exposure on such a high-profile show.
I would LOVE Shane Mosley or Winky Wright to take the co-feature spot in a good fight, but we all know they wouldn't swallow their pride to do that (well, Mosley might, but DLH probably wouldn't ask). I wish we could get Winky-Forrest or Mosley-Judah as the co-feature, but I have to be more realistic.
Joan Guzman has nothing scheduled. He's not the most exciting guy in the world, but he is a good candidate for a co-feature. If only Valero could get approved to fight in the US, a Guzman-Valero co-feature would be close to perfect. Guzman-Barrios II would seem like a real possibility.
If the Lacy-Tarver negotiations fall through (and with Tarver, that's a good bet), why not put the Lacy-Andrade fight on here? That would work for me.
Then there's Ponce De Leon. Why not put him in with Celestino Caballero or Steve Molitor?
Live from Dodger Stadium
De Leon-Caballero/Molitor
Lacy-Andrade
Guzman-Barrios II
Mayweather-DLH II
Would you buy this?
Give some ideas for the undercard and venue...
