I think the trick to getting stuff free on tv is corporate sponsorship. It doesn't seem like the top fortune 500 lend all that much money to the promotions. We see things like Tecate beer or Rock Star energy drink and such, but I think the big money goes to football and other sports.
Time Warner, HBO's parent company has deep pockets, it seems like they try to limit their investments in this arena, maybe due to backlash from the general public.
