Not true...

Legendary Manchester City goalkeeper Bernhard "Bert" Trautmann, an German soldier and POW, was knocked out in a collision with an opposing forward in the 75th minute of the 1956 FA Cup Final against Birmingham City (Manchester City were up 3:1 at the time). As substitutions were not permitted at the time he stayed in goal and became the hero of them match as he made a series of spectacular saves in the closing minute of the game. He afterwards complained of "a stiff neck" and went for an X-Ray which revealed he had broken his neck in the collision.
Here he is complaining about his "stiff neck"
