What people on a message board say can only hurt to the extent that it touches on what a person is going through in real life. If a guy has made an entirely false image of himself, say (he's turning pro and his girlfriend is buying him a Lamborghini, when he's an 0-5 amateur and his girlfriend dumped him), and this fact gets explained to him by internet chums, it could trigger the self-hatred he must have had to make the false persona anyway.

Edit: it's the boxing that's as much his problem; he talked for years about going pro, and everyone in T & N encouraged it, yet he can't beat rookie amateurs. He's about starting to realize
