Hopkins-Calzaghe: Close For April 12 in Vegas

Various UK sources are reporting that WBO/WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe (44-0, 32KOs) will move up in weight to challenge light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins (48-4-1, 32KOs) on April 12 in Las Vegas. The venue has not been set, although the MGM Grand and the Mandalay Bay are the two frontrunners. [details]

www.boxrec.com has this fight taking place in Yankee Stadium on April 12th. I personally don't think Bernard can fill a venue, but he does have the right opponent to sell any venue out. I just hope it's an entertaining fight regardless of where it takes place.

Both fighters and their promoters have personally said the fight is taking place in Las Vegas.

im not a HUGE calzaghe fan, altho i have nothing against him... but i think joe is the person to make bernard finally look his age... he got tarver at the right time, he was totally weight drained... no excuses, he just was... and winky never fought that high of a weight before, hes a blown up middleweight so 170 obviously winky is gonna be sluggish, which made him fight at bernards pace... finally i think even with joe stepping up in weight, he ll be able to just completely overwelm bernard... no knockouts of course

                oh oh.....

chasing the mighty dollar, bhop will get his butt kicked. joe is a tough high volume puncher!!! hopkins is a slow cagey veteran of the ring. i feel b-hop will resort to alot of dirty tatics ie headbutts, holding and low blows in this fight. when he sees he cant do handle joe's speed and pressure Bhop will look to turn it into a philly street fight. trust me i'd love to see b-hop pull it off, but this fight is about 7 years too late!!!! joe wins this fight easy!!!

                    Calzaghe deal imminent - Hopkins

Bernard Hopkins says he believes a contract to fight Joe Calzaghe in Las Vegas on 11 or 12 April will be signed no later than next week.
"We have an oral agreement. They have stood up for the last five years of my career," he told the Boxing Talk site.

"I'm just looking to make it happen and expect things to be wrapped up by the middle of next week at the latest. It's one of the biggest fights in boxing."

He added it would take place in the Mandalay Bay or MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Philadelphian Hopkins, 42, is widely regarded as the best light-heavyweight in the world, and the match with Wales' undisputed super-middleweight champion Calzaghe is likely to be made at the 175lb, light-heavyweight limit.

The pair squared up at the MGM Grand hotel in Vegas last month at the weigh-in for Ricky Hatton v Floyd Mayweather, sowing the seeds for another big British-US clash.

Pound-for-pound great Hopkins said he "would never let a white boy beat me" as he tried to taunt 10-year super-middleweight champion Calzaghe, who laughed off his boasts.

Newbridge-born Calzaghe, 35, has long been after a 'super-fight' against former middleweight king Hopkins, and is now ready to fight in the States.

The Welshman has won all of his 44 fights, with 32 knock-outs, and in his last outing he beat Mikkel Kessler to add the WBC and WBA titles to his WBO belt.

Hopkins, known as 'The Executioner', has a record of 48 wins, four defeats and one draw, and is one of only seven men (including Calzaghe) to have held world titles for 10 years.

"I've been training softly for the last two or three months, but hardcore training will start in two or three weeks from now," said Hopkins.
