GERMAN heavyweight Timo Hoffmann faces a one-year suspension after testing positive for an anabolic steroid!
The positive test came after the 33-year-old Hoffmann's November 17 loss to unbeaten prospect Alexander Dimitrenko (27-0, 17 knockouts). He was stopped with 36 seconds left in the fight against the Ukrainian, who is in line for a title shot.
Sauerland Promotions, Hoffmann's promoters, said today their boxers are tested regularly, but that the heavyweight prepared without their supervision under a new trainer, Uwe Schuster.
"Timo is just as shocked as me, we can't explain the finding,'' Schuster said. "I've never had anything to do with doping.''
Hoffmann (36-6-1, 20 KOs) is a journeyman who has relied on his 2.02 metre size and strong chin. He is the only man to go the distance with former WBC champion Vitali Klitschko (35-2, 34 knockouts), whose two losses were due to injuries.
"We are all very disappointed. If the 'B' sample is positive, his contract won't be extended under any circumstances,'' Sauerland business manager Christian Meyer said.
Hoffman, whose contract runs out at year's end, is Germany's top heavyweight.
