Who did Floyd beat to earn his shot at Genaro Hernandez?

Which elite fighter did Floyd beat to earn his shot at Genaro Hernandez?

I've asked this question millions of time and nobody can give me a solid answer.

Nobody... Tony Pep maybe, but that isn't really enough to force a fight.

He was an Olympic medalist who was hyped like hell to be great.

A good analogy is Jermain Taylor getting a shot at Hopkins. It wasn't forced, and Taylor didn't really beat anyone of note... Raul Marquez was a decent 154 pounder, and William Joppy was, well, old, like ready to die old.

His amatuer background is really the best explanation why he got that shot.

The difference is that Hernandez wasn't some star with people lining up to fight him. Hernandez took the fight because you make a lot of money on HBO and Mayweather was a readily available, HBO-compatible challenger.

Any other way I can be of some assistance?

You have gained my respect, even if it maybe for this one thread.

I would differ with you opinion of Taylor beating Marquez and Joppy, these are huge wins compared to who Floyd beat prior to getting a title shot -which was nobody.

He didn't beat anybody. Until he fought Hernandez. Therefore, that's all that really matters.

Hernandez had beaten Over the Hill, Azuma Nelson.

Floyd acctually opened as a mall underdog for the fight with Hernandez..

Another thing, back then fighters had strict contracts with the Networks, thats why we never got to see floyd against Casamayor or Freitas when they were all undefeated.

Listen the money was there for the Margarito fight too! YOu ****en jack ass@!

Hernandez was indeed highly respected in the boxing circles and his win over Azumah Nelson just elevated his star after fight Delahoya.

              Kid seriously do the research.

Fernando Vargas is a much better example than Jermain Taylor.

He fought a bunch of nobodies (comparable to Mayweather's first 17 opponents), and then he fought Yory Boy Campas.

Both were bronze medalists on the 1996 Olympic Team, and that clearly is the sole reason they were held in such high regard.

Yes, Hernandez was highly respected in boxing circles, but that doesn't make him a bonafide star.

What Asian said was 100% accurate.

He fought Oscar, however, he was by no means a "star" at that time either. He one prior PayPerView with Ruelas (I think) which did in the low 300k's (I think).

Genero was at no point ever a big enough draw to even warrant a PPV, even against Oscar De La Hoya.

Yeah, so this is why Hamed ran from Showtime into Hbo's hands.

Azumah Nelson was over the hill, and "Chicanito" wasn't on fresh legs either. He had lost to Delahoya, then came back down to his natural weight tried to restore his pride, fought Hernandez, Paez.

While Nelson who was supposed to be old ko'd Ruelas, then followed to ko, Leija, then Roy Jones Jr. himself (lol) thought the Hernandez fight was a safe fight for Nelson(who you said was over the hill).

When they fought the brillence boxing of Hernandez was putting on a clinic. Then Nelson had to fould, Hernandez, bluntly enough that the ref was going to award the fight to Hernandez but Hernandez refused to win the title like that asked for time then fought on to win a clear decicion to Nelson. Hernandez gaining huge respects from teh boxnig world and the Mexican fans once again.

Don't act like Hernandez win over Nelson didn't mean anything. Even in old form Nelson was on a roll till Hernandez got to him!@!!!
