    Ring Magazine 2008 Awards

    FLOYD MAYWEATHER NAMED
    FIGHTER OF THE YEAR

The Ring is pleased to announce that world welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather has been selected as Fighter of the Year for 2007. Mayweather fought twice in ’07, winning a 12-round decision over Oscar De La Hoya on May 5 in Las Vegas to capture the WBC super welterweight title, and knocking out Ricky Hatton in the 10th round on December 8 in defense of the world welterweight championship.

It is the second time Mayweather has won the honor, having also been The Ring’s 1998 Fighter of the Year. The award dates back to 1928, when heavyweight champion Gene Tunney was the first recipient.

    Other Ring magazine for 2007:

Fight of the Year: Israel Vazquez KO 6 Rafael Marquez II

Round of the Year: Israel Vazquez-Rafael Marquez II, Round 3

Knockout of the Year: Nonito Donaire KO 5 Vic Darchinyan

Upset of the Year: Nonito Donaire KO 5 Vic Darchinyan

Comeback of the Year: Paul Malignaggi

Event of the Year: Floyd Mayweather-Oscar De La Hoya

Read all the details in the April 2008 issue of The Ring, on sale January 29.

Also, the WBC and Yahoo sports has recognized the Vazquez-Marquez fight as the "fight of the year"

One of the best fights ive ever seen. Not just because of the action, but because of the level of talent and skill in that ring that created the action. hardly any wild/thoughtless punches, precision and strategy. drama. incredible

Amazing round but I think this should have gone to Bika/Cordrington

      Thats ****in bull****.

He didnt deserve it at all. Floyd fought guys he was rediculously favored to beat, and beat them like he was supposed.

Pavlik wasnt supposed to beat Taylor or Miranda, but he knocked both of them out

Cotto wasnt supposed to dominate Judah like he did, and he wasnt "supposed" to beat Mosley, but he did...

Zertuche and Urkal was just icing on the cake for both fighters.

Rediculous that he got this award.

DLH just wants to be able to say "2007's" fighter of the Year, when he's promoting COTTO-MAYWEATHER somehow... and since he owns the ring he is able to do that

Floyd was in the two biggest fights so I can understand. I do not agree with the knock out at all. Cintron's was better, and Wilson's was definitely better.

He danced for a little before he got up.....which gave the RING judges the approval.

WILSON-NWODO was the best KO of the year, by far, imo. Can't really disagree with anything else, although I thought round 1 of the Bika vs Jaidon fight may have been the best round of the year.

KO of the year was bull****.......Wilson-Nwodo shouldve gotten it.....

Round of the year shouldve gone to Bika-Codrington, but Marquez-Vasquez round 3 was great, so its not a big deal...

Fighter of the year was obvious, Floyd won the 2 biggest events of the year.....a shame for Pavlik, who you could make a case he deserved it...

Fight of teh year was obvious as well...

good list except for KO of the year IMO...

Can't complain about the awards apart from KO of the year. I also think the Wilson KO deserves it more.
