Good post, was about to post the same.
They also have the series of immigrant boxers by groups, like "***ish" "Irish" "Italian" etc.
ESPN should really let the tapes out more often.
Could you imagine the sport without African-Americans, terrible thought.Last edited by Benny Leonard; 12-14-2007, 12:18 AM. -

They should be on soon, that's my guess. Once they start to show one, they tend to show them all. Just stay up from 12 midnight-? Look for names like "Sweet Science" or "Duke-it-out"...anything related to boxing that looks documentary.
Friday is about "Fighting the Mob"
The pictures of Sam McVey they just showed, incredible. Looks like Tyson's build.Last edited by Benny Leonard; 12-14-2007, 12:30 AM.Comment

that doc actually brought up a very significant and important aspect of race in boxing. it stated that poverty mandated which races dominated Boxing because Boxing is a poor man's sport. ***ish, Irish and Italian fighters dominated the sport in the early century because that was when these groups were migrating to the US in search for financial security. Boxing was easily accessible in the poorer areas inhabitant by immigrants and was an excellent source of income. But as soon as these groups started educating themselves and finding other sources of income, their presence was less and vacated by other groups that were financially challenged. Hence African Americans and Hispanics.Comment

They built gyms in poor neighborhoods, lots of them, and since the only other sport at the time was really baseball, boxing was a huge alternative. You have to imagine being a 5'6, 120 pound kid and thinking, "can I make it as a pro baseball player", then look at your options and what do you see, boxing...it's setup for all shapes and sizes.Comment
