The difference between a "Check Hook" and a Regular "Left Hook"

A check hook is basically a mix of a hook and an uppercut. It comes in at a strange angle so it cant really be considered an uppercut. It's pretty basic...fighters learn it in the amatuers, but even pro's make mistakes, which is why hatton took one to the chin.

Muhammad Ali used what was called a "drag hook" albeit with different effects, most notably in his 1977 fight with Earnie Shavers.

If you saw the fight, you will see Mayweather backing up as he threw it allowing Hatton's momentum to increase the effectiveness of the blow... another indication of how a check hook is used to turn defense into offense.

Still only a very speedy fighter such as Ali or Mayweather or Jones would be able to get away with that sort of a punch while backing away.

It is a way to keep someone from throwing at you, in planting your foot inside someones foot or pressing your hand against their arm while you are in close is a way to "check them". A check hook is what you use to keep aggressive boxers from lunging at you.

It is not a term "Mayweather created" When floyd landed that punch, Steward was the first to call it "That was a Beautiful check hook"

Yeah Floyd really baited Hatton to come in with that lunging left, he had planned to land that punch since the beginning of the round, ever since he stopped throwing it early in the fight because Hatton was adjusting.

            i hope not...

some guys gave a look (when floyd landed it) as if to almost ask if he did create it...

            anyway...

when i see that knockdown i think about how i can't believe hatton got caught with that...that was definately a mistake on his part as well...

but all the credit to floyd; it was a beautiful moment in the fight.

What's funny is all these reporters using the term like they are knowledgable viewers of the sport when more than half of them never heard of the term before Floyd said it during the interview.

Is the check hook the same as "The Smash" by Razor Ruddock?

I think Vic Darchinyan got hit by the same punch by Donaire, but ill have to look at it again in slow motion.
