Boxers who owe their forum "popularity" to hatred of a rival...

... when I first came on this site I always had a high opinion of Junior Witter, thinking he had the potential to be the real deal, and that his only career loss came at two week's notice in a 12 rounder (when he hadn't been past 8 before) and before he'd developed his power. Of course, I got taken no notice of.

But even though Junior's since won the WBC belt and beaten a higher calibre of opponents, it seems that his sudden legitimacy on here solely relates to the "yo, hatten is ducking him, lamo, pwn!"

Can you think of any more? Certainly Lacy/Kessler qualify, as do arguably Margarito/Paul Williams/Cotto. Hell, even Bernard Hopkins is getting rated as a killer at 42.

    Yea it is absurd.
Its amazing that the same night Hatton and Floyd fought we found out they were both ducking Witter and Cotto respectivly.
    Crazy.

It just makes me that Junior Witter couldn't get **** on here and was the guy who "ran" (even though he didn't... wtf?) against Judah. But then as soon as Hatton gets in the rankings, all of a sudden he's everyone's favourite.

I'll never understand Hopkins. He was never at all popular until he lost to Taylor. then people stuck up for him because he fought for four rounds, which they thought was enough to win a fight. I've never liked Hopkins and I certainly won't be pulling for him against Calzaghe. I'll watch that **** indifferently hoping somebody actually gets beat down, but we'll probably get a really boring fight. hopefully Calzaghe makes him fight

I think Lacy was more popular because he was KOing people and always providing good fights while Calzaghe didn't fight anybody for years. I genuinely thought Lacy had a shot to become the new face of boxing and liked the guy. now I hate his attitude and lack of motivation. I don't think people liking him was out of hatred for Joe because most people backing Lacy had never seen Calzaghe fight (which is why people picked Lacy)

I think Mayweather is genuinely hated and the guys who will now back Cotto or Williams are the same guys who backed Hatton and De La Hoya and Baldomir and Gatti. not saying those guys don't have their own fanbases (I know Gatti and Hatton do) but they certainly grew twice as big when they were fighting Mayweather and dwindled thereafter

People hate what is seemingly unstoppable. I bet if Mayweather loses before he retires he will gain tons of fans from losing. People don't like perfection it seems....

You're being reasonable in debates, lately, Diego. I remember you used to be good like this, I prefer it without none of the unnecessary flaming.

As for Mayweather, he does build his ticket sales on being "the villain", so I guess it's only natural. He picked up some casual green teef fans this weekend though.

casual being the operative word. Truth be known we ****ing love our sportsmen with vulnerabilities don't we? Floyd doesn't have any. It'd be like supporting Manchester United in the mid-90's, or Michael Schumacher in formula 1.

I mean Floyd showed class and all, but I will naturally just pull for any other guy to win, every single time. Unless Floyd gets hammered, hits the canvas and picks himself up and stages a comeback. Then i'll back him...which is pretty damn unfair.

Hopkins is a killer at 42. And he will be until people can show me any other currently active 42 year old fighter that can still win his fights pretty decisively. The training routine of Hopkins is second only to Mayweather's, and it would break any 25 year old fighter in half.

(I'm sorry, what were we talking about again? Your statement about Hopkins had me seeing red!)
