What should a boxer prefer, more money or better legacy? Does mayweather need Cotto?

me and my boy arguing over this last night ... he still didnt want to give mayweather his props ... he is a cotto fan for real ! ! ! ! he was like man... mayweather gets no respect til he fights Cotto ... I tried to explain to him that mayweather beating delahoya , is sort of in a sense like cotto beating shane mosley ...except i think cotto vs shane was a draw ... tried to explain to him that Cotto stock is not that good ...no one knew cotto before the mosley fight ...and cotto is a very boring person outside of the ring ... at this point in his career Cotto is not going to make Mayweather 25,000,000 if they fought ...

its about cash on money


hatton (easier fight) 25,000,000 > cotto (harder fight maybe,$10,000,000) ...

1) I don't think Cotto is the harder fight
2) Cotto doesn't make or break Mayweather and if Mayweather doesn't fight Cotto, but Cotto ends up winning 6 titles in 5 weight classes or winning nearly 20 title fights while staying undefeated, then I'm proven wrong. Until then Floyd doesn't need to prove anything, at least to Cotto.


Put it like this. You've seen the Rocky movies, right? Every time he came out of retirement, it was to beat somebody who everyone was saying is better and accomplished more than him, which compelled Rocky to take the challenge.. Well, Floyd is p4p #1 and universally recognized as the champ of Miguel's division. Nobody thinks Miguel is better than Floyd. If Floyd was Marvin Hagler, then Cotto is definitely not Floyd's defining Sugar Ray Leornard, or vice versa. If Mayweather is genuinely bored with boxing, then by all means, going out by KOing an undefeated top 10 ranked p4p fighter is a good note to take a vacation on to think. People make me sick with the "he has to fight Cotto" nonsense. In order to prove what?

Definitely not to prove that he's the greatest of all time and definitely not p4p #1 (already proven). It won't prove either so people need to stop blowing it up to more than it is. Cotto is nothing more than a fight that a lot of people want to see. It won't break or make Mayweather and Floyd beats him anyhow, probably easier than Hatton.

if floyd retires now, his legacy is debatable. if mayweather fights cotto and maybe another welter - cintron, margarito or williams and wins. then his legacy is unparalleled and NOT debatable.

so yes in my estimation, he needs cotto. proper heads coming into this fight saw that hatton's only way of winning was to bull rush floyd and he made it a fight until he just got way too predictable plus hes just not big enough to compete @ 147, amongst the elite.

cotto is the goods and honestly if the fight doesn't get made this talk of floyd being the best is just that, talk. i got mayweather winning that cotto fight, barely - but come on, it has to be made.

His legacy is not debatable for couple of reason

first he is 5 time champion different weight division which is hard to name couple of guy who have this stuff.

Boxing will stay but Floyd will retire sometime. If it not today it will be later and He already been in boxing for 10 years collected WBC belts from five weighclass.

If Cotto want to fight Floyd he should quit WBO and go for the WBC belt in the future after Floyd vacant it.
