Ive been waiting to say this, for ages, its not about being right, its just some interesting pointers on how the events before tonight.
I never made a final prediction for this fight online, i was pretty sure mayweather would win, and my best friends who might read this is a HUGE boxing fan and he kept calm all week that reassured me that floyd would win, to be honest, Hatton lost this fight well before he ever came near the ring, it showed in several ways before the fight, and i just wanted to see what people thought about this.
1) The Talk: Too much of hatton's talk centred around what was gonna happen IF floyd underestimated him, he kept talking about it non-stop, saying he was alot better than what mayweather gave him credit for. He was totally reliaint non irrational factors and so where the people around him. There was too much talk about Curry-Honeyghan, Duran-Leonard 1, factor which were not gonna play a part in this fight. The part where he turned to floyd and said 'floyd youv'e got nowt to worry about' gave it away big time, he was definatley depending on mayweather not taking him seriously, in my eyes he had already accepted that he probably couldnt win the fight if mayweather was fuly focused and fit.
2) The Weigh in: Mayweather was clearly uncomfortable with the reception he got, he looked bemused slightly, and tried to diffuse the tension by baiting the crowd and putting his kids on stage. But again, hatton was clearly doing some desperate last minute tactics the get in floyd's head, a clear sign he knew he had to do something to de-rail mayweather, the final straw was when he took the mic and asked the crowd who they came to see, it was like something out a pantomime with hatton desperately trying to rile mayweather by using the crowd. He was definitely out of his element, and was way too pumped up, thus why afterwards i said it would be very interesting to see hatton's entrance to the ring, because the enormity of it all was clearly gonna make itself apparent to him, and i felt he would be very emotional in a fight he needed to be calm in.
3)Training: Anyone who saw the boxing scene video of mayweather training must have seen he was in tip top shape, no way was he taking hatton lightly. But Hatton definaley overcooked himself in training, he was in shape way before the fight started and spent the few weeks of the fight trying to maintain that shape while doing media work, thats the reason he came in at 145 at the weigh in.
4)Tactics: Two critical mistakes hatton made here, the first was actually telling the whole world his gameplan and giving mayweather about 3 months to prepare for hatton bull-rushing him. I have always said, hatton had to do something different for periods of the fight to keep floyd guessing, because there was every chance floyd could adapt and work him out. Even so, hatton should have given the illusion he was gonna do something different to keep floyd guessing, him and billy graham telling everyone exactly what they were gonna do before the fight didnt help.
5) The fans: In a way, that was one of his biggest factors to win the fight, but it also could have hindered him, he had alot more to lose than people thought, he didnt wana let his fans down, was very emotional in the build up to the fight and i felt he felt the pressure of having to deliver for an entire nation. In my humble opinion, i think hatton came into the fight with alot of pressure.
6) Siege Mentality: The final mistake he made was being overly aggressive towards mayweather at the weigh in, but also the press conference in manchester was a key moment. It was the moment where mayweather was genuinely upset, the man wants to be popular deep down and he was hurt by the chants and bottles that were thrown at him. The man has been rejected his whole life, and i dont believe he can take rejection very well. What he does to counter this is develop siege mentality where he convinces himself everyone wants to see him lose, its him against the world, and the only thing he can do it be prepared because he cant stand to lose face in public. Thats what drives him to train at 2am in the morining and if he hadnt taken the fight seriously before, after manchester, he definatley gained focus.
In general i think if anything mayweather was seriously underestimated by hatton's camp, they spent too much time basing their game plan around a single win or bust tactic and around mayweather not being focused. Thats my point of view, but credit to ricky hatton, the man conducts himself like a gentleman and never bitched once about the loss, he took it like a man, for that he got even more respect from me then he already had.
