    Williams denied in Basle

Danny Williams' bid for the IBF intercontinental heavyweight title ended in a no contest after an accidental headbutt kept Oleg Platov from continuing in Basle on Saturday night.

The Ukrainian picked up a badly bleeding cut over the left eye in the second round and although he was eager to fight on, the referee ended the bout with 45 seconds of the fourth round remaining.

According to the IBF rules, the verdict therefore had to be a no contest, to the disappointment of the 34-year-old Brixton fighter.

It was an action-filled bout from the first bell on as Platov greeted Williams with a powerful left hook early on.

A furious exchange developed in the following, with Platov pinning his opponent into the corner.

Williams was happy join in the exchange and punished Platov with a superb left upper-cut in the middle of the round.

Both fighters were marked after just three minutes, and it got worse in the second round.

Williams fired in a few strong shots which wobbled his foe - only for Platov to return the favour.

It was during one of those wild exchanges that a bad cut opened above Platov's left eye which the referee ruled came from an accidental headbutt.

Platov kept marching forward, but Williams cleverly picked him off and used his jab to keep him at bay.

In the fourth, Williams landed a hard right and followed it up with a one-two which seemed to hurt Platov - but soon after the contest was ended.
    Danny ****ing had him dammit!
