Wilfredo Gomez! 42 KO's in 44 Wins (only 3 losses and 1 draw), most of which came by way of his picture-perfect left hook which was so good and so powerful, Sugar Ray Leonard studied and tried to immitate it! Many say twas much better than Joe Frazier's. "Bazooka" also had the most number of successful consecutive defenses for a SuperBantam with 16 and could have done more were it not for his weight problems. He gave up his crown without having been defeated at that weight category. He had to try for featherweight and jr. light successes but instead met defeats in the hands of such greats as Salvador Sanchez and Azumah Nelson. His victims' list as Superbantam includes such names as Dong Kyun Yum (who was never KD'd much less KO'd in 57 fights until he met Gomez who took him out with one punch in the 12th), Royal Kobayashi (KO3), CARLOS ZARATE (TKO5), Nicky Perez and Lupe Pintor!

Ah, Wilfredo Gomez...one of my favorite fighters to watch during that time.

One of the most technically gifted fighters I've ever had the pleasure of seeing, as not only could he knock people out with both hands (you mention his left, but his right cross was also pretty damn good, as well), but he could also pick you apart while he boxed from the outside. And his counter punching skills were top notch, which were showcased when he frequently made his opponents miss with his great defensive skills (great footwork and upper body movement).

He accomplished a lot, but just imagine what could've been if he had taken his career a lot more seriously.

Instead of being the greatest jr. featherweight of all-time, if he had spent more time in the gym, he might've gone down in history as the greatest fighter to ever fight in the much more glamorous bantamweight division.

Yes, pal, he had it all! That, inspite of his lousy training habits!!! I singled out the left because it was the better hailed and Ray Leonard really tried to make something similar part of his arsenal; but, yes, his right was something to behold, as well! Fact is, the way he fought was something to behold!!!

Whenever I think of Gomez, I automatically think of Wilfred Benitez too. Both go into the list of what could have beens... had they taken their careers more seriously.

Yes, you'd have every right to single out that left hook of his. Afterall, it was responsible for more than a few knockouts. It was a single left hook that dropped Koyabashi for the count, and it was also the left hook that started all the trouble for the great Carlos Zarate, in Gomez' greatest win of his career (There's other examples of his hook, as well).

You know, whenever I think of Wilfredo Gomez and his incredible punching power, I think back to that fight he had with Juan LaPorte.

You want to talk about some of the toughest fighters of recent times, look no further than the Juan LaPorte of that fight. LaPorte took powershot, after powershot, after powershot, after powershot, from Gomez for the full twelve rounds and refused to go down (and he was caught on the ropes for most of the fight). Incredible!

I'll say Mike Tyson too. He had explosive power in both of his fists. I've seen him floor a fighter with a jab
