He stands so close so that he can actually see what his opponent looks like before the fight starts, cause once it does, he cant quite get a good look from over his shoulder, and the running also will make Hatton blurry and hard to identify.

Whatever Mayweather was telling him in his ear, he was not playing. Mayweather does the stare down, but he does not generally do the shoving etc. He tries to keep it to taunts etc. outside of the ring. I think he may have been telling Hatton to calm down some.
