    SEE? Here we go.....

DIARY- December 6, 2007: Here we go. This is exactly what I was worried about!

Hide says "I was the first!" While reading the latest boxing news on *********.com, Herbie Hide, “The Dancing Destroyer” couldn't believe his eyes. WBC Interim Champion Samuel Peter was named “first-ever Nigerian-born heavyweight champion” in an article regarding celebrations at his latest visit in his home country. Herbie who is now fighting for Hamburg-based arena Box-Promotion said, "I’m from Nigeria as well – I can’t believe anybody forgot that I won the world heavyweight championship twice! And I am going to win the world cruiserweight championship for arena next year to make sure people remember me then!" The former two-time WBO champion (1994-1995 and 1997-1999) will be back in action on December 23rd in Halle (Germany) against unbeaten Russian prospect Mikhail Nasyrov.

See? Just what I always figured -and feared- would happen. You have all these sanctioning bodies and sooner or later one of their champions would challenge the big three (WBA, WBC, IBF). Hide honestly considers himself a two-time world heavyweight champion (equaling Floyd Patterson)?? What's next? An IBA, IBC, or WBF champion telling Mayweather he wants to unify? Will one of these guys ask the press, "How can Mayweather claim he's the real champ when he doesn't have my IBC belt?"

The WBO is a major belt also, hence why its called the BIG FOUR, not just the big 3.

Besides, the belt is only worth the fighter who holds it, and Hide was a decent champion.

I was thinking this the other day. Tarver has the IBO belt and it looks like more and more fighters are starting to go after these minor belts. RJJ did, Hatton etc.... I think that 3 isn't soo bad because it offer people a way of seeing who the 3 top people are and matching them against each other. Whereas if we had one champ then the rest would be top-level contenders and we'd get the same people fighting each other (I think)

I dont mind the belts, Unification bouts are always big. Plus having a strap always gets the fighters more green.

The fact that people "dont mind" is part of the problem, though (no offense)

I think a true boxing fan know's who the real Champion is, titles bring more people to show's and make fights on Tv more appealing. I'll rather see fighters make better paydays then have champs fight one or twice a year for the one title in the division.

What about those great fighters who've held the WBO belt?

                  Calzaghe - 168
                  Cotto - 140
                  Calderon - 105/108

Would anyone out there not consider them champions at those weight classes just because they held the WBO belt?

I dont consider Cotto the champ at 140, he was a title holder but not the champ.
