Carlos Monzon - he was stripped of the WBC when he chose to fight Mantequilla Napoles instead of Rodrigo Valdez in 1974. Two years later, he took on Valdez to win back the WBC belt ( the WBA did not follow WBC's lead of stripping Monzon). Then, in 1977, he faced Valdez again, was knocked down in the 2nd round, had trouble in the early rounds but rallied and managed to win by UD via margins of three (twice) and two points in the judges' scorecards. He announced his retirement about a month later, having compiled exactly 100 fights (3 losses and 9 draws, all of his 3 defeats having come in the first two years of his close to 15 years of pro fighting).
He had just celebrated his 35th birthday when he retired.
The Valdez kd was his first and only visit to the canvass. People speculated then that finally, his lifestyle had caught up with him.
I nominate Monzon because I just like the way he took it to the WBC--twice-- for stripping him of his belt, and doing that as exclamation points to end his career.Last edited by grayfist; 12-05-2007, 09:03 PM.Comment

The only fighter to retire undefeated and undrawed as champ. Some Korean guy retired a while ago with a record of 16-0-2.Comment
