Bautista, Banal Card Draws Low TV Ratings

The television ratings for the ABC 5 coverage of the “Payback” fight card headlined by ALA boys Rey “Boom Boom” Bautista and AJ “Bazooka” Banal against Mexican opponents at the Araneta Coliseum last Sunday were disappointing despite the promotional hype. [details]

Get em in there with some real Mexican opponents, then we can combine our desire to see these fights for some good ratings.

Many fans are dissapointed with Bautista I think. If he wons a few more impressively then people will want to see him again. If he doesn't improve his defense then maybe he should think anbout hanging up his gloves.

That's very disappointing though.. shows Fiipino's are nothing but bandwagon fans. He's only 21, there's plenty of time.

            1. The station that carried the fight does not have a well-propagated signal. I heard a lot of complaints from people that they could not pick up ABC's signal from the airwaves. One has to be a cable subscriber to get it in many areas in Metro Manila, I have been told.

On the other hand, both ABS and GMA have pretty good on-the-air reach and saturation.

A vast majority of fight fans in the Philippines are not cable subscribers. They get their TV through the airwaves.

            2. The fights of Bautista and Banal reached homes that can be reached by ABC in the afternoon. The morning fights featured unknowns. It is not a surprise that people tuned in to the Donaire fight which was aired in the morning, rather than watch fighters they do not recognize.

            3. Bautista and Banal's drawing power is best gaugued not by the average rating from morning till afternoon. It must be measured by way of the ratings of the specific time slots that they appeared. The average might give the wrong impression as it is very probable that the high ratings that may have been registered by the specific time block in which Bautista and Banal appeared, were pulled down by the low ratings of the undercard.

            4. In the context of the oft-heard description that the Philippines is a "basketball-batty country," it is remarkable that the seemingly endless fight card headlined by Bautista and Banal should rate higher than games played in the premier basketball league of the country (PBA). That the PBA games came right after the fight and was aired in the same station, lends some credence to the argument that a good chunk of Filipinos tuned in to ABC for the fights and not for sports in general. It seems to mean, at least to me, that there were mainstream viewers who tuned in then went to other stations when the basketball games came on. If that is the case, then, that is a credit to Bautista and Banal.

            5. It is not surprising that Z Gorres' "Moment of Truth" rated a lot higher than the last apperances of Banal and Bautista. The Gorres fight had a world title at stake (WBO).

            6. Expectedly Bautista's "devastation" of Marino Montiel rated higher than his outing at the Araneta Coliseum. That Montiel fight was the undercard for the Z Gorres title bid and was part of the so-called, "Moment of Truth".

There's no iota of doubt that Bautista and Banal have a lot of proving to do. But rating higher than the PBA and doing 8+ on a station with a weak and ill-propagated signal, fighting for regional belts on a day when a world title fight featuring another Filipino was held, does not mean a huge slump in fans' interest in Bautista and Banal. To claim that is to abet the killing of the careers of two young boys who are working hard to free themselves from the shackles of poverty and attain their dreams. Grossly unfair, especially so because the methodology employed to evaluate the data in the comparisons is severely flawed.
