Supposedly Margarito offered the fight in 05. Floyd turned him down and fought Sharmba. Entering a weightclass you don't belong you'd fight a tuneup. Then he can make a fight with Zab. They were already planning the fight before Zab fought Baldomir.
Before that fight Zab was considered better than Margarito. He was a champion himself.

Things like this is what made me turn against Mayweather. It's a shame the best fighter of this era is a coward afraid to chase true greatness.
